PITCH IN

The school’s pitches are in desperate need of attention, as many of you are aware the standard of the pitches does not meet the level the school play at. With your help we can raise enough money to re-lay the top field in two phases. The total cost of the project will be £8000.

Phase Two
Work to be carried out- drainage and re-seed
Estimated costs- initially £3000, £1000 annually
Start date- Sept 2012
Completion date- Jan 2013

Phase One
Work to be carried out- drainage and re-seed
Estimated costs- initially £3000, £1000 annually
Start date- April 2012

Completion date- Sept 2012 The Work The topsoil at Beechen Cliff is clay in texture and becomes waterlogged and slippery when saturated. Without additional attention to drainage and maintenance deterioration is inevitable. The surface seals up, depressions fill with water, the soil softens, there is nowhere for the water to go and so a quagmire develops and grass coverage is lost. The only practical solution is to promote rapid run-off and enable water to by-pass the clay through the addition of sand and pore spaces to the soil profile, the regular use of deep aerating equipment and the introduction of desirable grass species that are capable of coping with heavy wear. These grasses must in turn, be kept healthy with a sensible fertilisation regime. The proposed renovation to our fields includes all of the above procedures and with a regular annual commitment to increased ongoing maintenance, we will see a huge improvement on the surface and hopefully the standard of sport played on it.

The ‘Pitch In’ Project

Beechen Cliff School has created an outstanding reputation for sport over the last 40 years and continues to grow year on year both in the number of boys taking part in physical activity and the standards we are achieving across all areas of sport. The school continues to strive to improve the facilities for our pupils and in the last 2 years has seen the fantastic new Astroturf pitch, a 5-a-side 3G pitch and the re-introduction of a cricket square. These facilities are enjoyed by pupils and the local community.

Everyone ‘Pitch In’ for Beechen’s pitches

Our most used facility remains our grass pitches. However, due to the number of boys playing sport for the school the grass pitches are heavily used and subsequently of poor quality. This restricts the level of performance our pupils are capable of.

We aim to raise significant funds to improve the quality of our grass pitches through various sources of fundraising. Our aim for phase one is to raise £4000. This will involved works to the main pitch and surrounding cricket area. In phase two, we aim to raise a further £4000 to continue works on the second pitch.

To achieve these targets you can help in the following ways;

Become a ‘pitch donor’ contributing any of the following amounts annually, £20, £50 or £100. In doing so your name will be added to a plaque at school.

  • Sponsorship – we are looking for potential business sponsors to support this project. Sponsors will have a separate plaque.

There will be other fundraising ‘events’ involving pupils – we would hope our pupils will see the value of the project and support us in running such events.

If you are interested in supporting this project as a sponsor or donor please feel free to contact Mr Macdonald or Mr Wilmot.

Please download the link and return it to the Main Office for the attention of Mr P Macdonald if you wish to become a pitch donor.
