Please note clubs may be subject to change at short notice, therefore the following list is a guide.

Our Library is open every day for pupils and students to read, undertake homework and study. Beechen Cliff Library offers a ‘safe’ place for pupils to study, do their homework, use the internet or simply unwind and read a good book.

Library Club

Runs from 8.00am until 2.30pm and 3.30pm – 4.00pm with Mrs Leonardi. All pupils are encouraged to take an active part in sport and outdoor activities. We regularly compete with other schools in a wide range of sports. There are music and drama events and frequent trips both home and abroad.

Breakfast

Open every morning for all pupils and students in the Dining Hall, from 8.00am to 8.25am. Serving delicious, nutritious meals including full English breakfast, bacon sandwiches, baguettes, bagels and drinks. Why not come and join us?

Art Club – runs Terms 1 – 6 inclusive

All Years welcome, Wednesday from 3.25pm – 4.15 pm with Miss Holloway in Dali Art Room. A great opportunity to learn new skills and techniques. Come along and join us!

Amnesty International Society – runs Terms 1-6

Open to 6th Form Monday 12.15pm – 1.10pm with Miss Netto in RSC1. Amnesty International is an organisation which aims to campaign for the human rights of individuals and groups around the world. Our Sixth Form society is to raise awareness of selected issues, campaign for them and will include some fundraising events. Anyone is welcome to come along, and this group might be particularly relevant who has an interest in charity work, law, politics, current affairs or ethics.

Board Games Club – runs Terms 1 – 6

These puzzles support the development and co-ordination of a wealth of skills, such as lateral thinking, numeracy and literacy, spatial awareness, visual perception, fine motor skills, problem solving and much more. Year groups below are invited to join Sixth Formers and Mrs Leonardi in the English Block:

  • Year 7: Thursday lunchtime 12.15 to 1.15pm in the English Block (Ridley)
  • Years 8, 9, 10 & 11: Tuesday lunchtime 1.15pm to 1.55pm in the English Block

Chess Club – runs Terms 1 – 6 inclusive

All levels welcome, please come along for a game, to watch or pick up tips. All Year groups are invited to join Mr Anstey.
All Years : Monday lunchtime 12.15pm – 2.15pm in B5

Christian Union – runs Terms 3 – 6

Christian Union is open to all pupils in Years 8-11 who would like to explore a variety of issues and have a place to discuss their ideas about anything (think ultimate questions – why are we here? How did we get here? What is the meaning of life etc.), including faith and religion. Pupils with all different religious backgrounds or interests are welcome to join in with a range of activities and have some time to relax and reflect during the busy school week.

Years 8 – 11: Wednesday lunchtime 1.15pm – 2.15pm in RSC2 with Miss Netto

Combined Cadet Force (CCF) – runs Terms 1 – 6

Open all Years, 9 through 13 on Wednesday evenings after school from 4.00pm – 6.00pm at King Edwards School. The CCF is a youth organisation which aims to teach practical skills such as map and compass reading, adventure training, military and survival skills and first aid. It also offers opportunities to develop valuable life qualities such as leadership, resourcefulness, self-reliance and endurance. Please see Mr Matheson for further details.

Computer Programming Club – runs Terms 1 – 6

Pupils and students in all years are invited to join Mrs James on Friday afternoons from 3.30pm – 4.30pm in C1. Come along if you would like how to write programmes, or your own games and websites. No experience necessary – all Welcome.

Debating and Public Speaking – ‘Beechen Orators’

A diverse range of subjects are debated in what is a lively and sociable society. All will develop the ability to talk knowledgably about issues they feel strongly about and learn how to argue in a persuasive and cogent style. The society aims to compete strongly in external competitions, where pupils and students will get the opportunity to impress speakers from other schools with their rhetorical prowess!

Sixth Form Debating Club (Years 12-13)

Debating Club for Years 12 and 13 often involves coaching at competition level but if you would like to learn some skills without competing, do come along as everyone is very welcome. Debating competitions generally take place between October and March so please register interest as early as possible Please see below for sessions running for different Year groups

Duke of Edinburgh Training 2016

This popular voluntary activity programmes with four sections: a Volunteering, Physical, Skills and a Team Expedition (a Residential Expedition for Gold) with activities chosen to suit your individual interests. Everyone in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 welcome. Please see Mr Young/Mr Brewer for further information regarding training for this.

French Film Club runs Terms 1 – 6 inclusive

Open to pupils in Years 10 and 11 – Friday Lunchtimes 1.15pm 2.15pm in L3 with Mrs Merrett. Pupils will have the opportunity to watch a French film with English subtitles so as to improve their knowledge of both French culture and the language and the arts as well as improve their pronunciation.

Journalism Club – runs Terms 1 – 6

For Pupils in Years 8,9,10 and 11 runs each Wednesday lunchtime, from 1.15pm – 2.10pm in English Block. We will be writing articles and puzzles, eg. Book of the week, top 10 reads, anagrams and local events. Have a look at the work our journalists have done by visiting BBN on the website. Please see Mrs James for further information.

Latin Club – runs Terms 1 -6

Open to Years 7 and 8, this club/course offers an introduction to Latin through stories set in Pompeii. No previous knowledge required. Open to current members, as well as the new and curious. Mr Crow runs this on Wednesdays 3.30pm – 4.20pm in E-Smith.

Maths Challenge – runs Terms 3 – 6

An opportunity for all interested Year 7 boys to work on their mathematical problem solving skills during. Running throughout terms 3 – 6, we will try our hand at individual as well as team challenges such as crossnumbers and relay questions which require quick thinking and good team work skills. Join Miss Cumber in M3 , Thursday lunchtimes, 12.20pm – 1.15pm.

Maths Help sessions for 6th Form students – runs Terms 1 -6

All students requiring help or support with Maths are invited to join Mr Gill in either M4 or M5 on Wednesday after school from 3.30pm – 4.30pm.

MUSICAL Activities/Clubs

Concert Band – Years 7 and Sixth Form – runs Terms 1 – 6

Concert Band runs all Year. This is open to all woodwind, brass and percussion players of any ability in Years 7 and Sixth Form on Tuesday afternoons 3.30pm – 4.15pm in the Recital Room with Mr Calvert. The repertoire ranges from original works through to popular arrangements. This is the biggest school ensemble and it is usually the headline act at the School Concert!

Concert Band/Saxaphone Group – runs Terms 1-6

Years 8 – 11 on Tuesday lunchtimes 1.30pm – 2.15pm in the Recital Room with Mrs Bolton and Mr Calvert

Music Folk Group – run Terms 1 – 6

Folk Group runs Terms 1 -6. Mrs Nourse invites all string players, guitarists, accordionists, whistle players etc. of any ability in all years to join the Folk Group on Thursday afternoons, 3.30pm – 4.15pm in the Music Block. This dynamic group is in demand both at school and playing at events in the wider community.

Guitar Ensemble – runs Terms 1 – 6

This activity runs all year, Terms 1 – 6. Mr Clark welcomes guitarists of Grade 2 and above from all years to join his guitar ensemble which takes place on Monday at 3.30pm – 4.15pm in the Music Block to play a wide range of music from 16th Century lute music to rock classics. The guitar group perform at the carol service in Bath Abbey and also at the School Concert in the Spring

Year 7 Orchestra – runs Terms 1 – 6

Runs throughout the year. This ensemble is for Year 7 musicians of any ability from beginning through to advanced. It is a good opportunity for new pupils to get involved in the musical life of the School. The repertoire ranges from classical to pop with a focus on improving ensemble skills. This is held on Monday lunchtime 12.15pm – 12.45pm in the Music Block with Mr Calvert.

Rock Choir – Runs Terms 3 -6

A new ensemble which is running Terms 3 – 6, which focuses on a choice of music promoted by the pupils. All pupils and students are invited to join us after school on Monday in the Recital Room from 3.30pm – 4.15pm. Please see Mrs Nourse for further information.

String Ensemble – runs Terms 1 – 6

This ensemble mainly focuses on classical arrangements but has also performed some more modern music and is open to all string players who are Grade 1 and above. In recent years, some of our pupils and students have written music for the group to great acclaim. The group performs at the annual School Concert. The ensemble welcomes all years to play every Wednesday throughout Terms 1- 6, after school 3.30pm – 4.15pm in the Music Block with Mrs Nourse.

Swing Band – runs Terms 1 – 6

This ensemble is open to all year groups. There is an informal audition. Players will be expected to have reached at least Grade 3 standard. The group regularly performs in assemblies, school concerts and the wider community. Swing Band members meets each Wednesday, during Terms 1 – 6, 1.30pm-2.15pm in the Music Block with Mr Daniels

Photography Club- runs Terms 1 – 6

This club is open to all year groups for fun. Running on Mondays after School in Art –Klimt by Mr Murphy. Pupils will need their own cameras, but anything will do from a phone camera to full DSLR if they have one. Pupils will learn about taking pictures and using Photoshop to enhance them. There is an opportunity to learn how to produce a picture using traditional darkroom techniques as well, but as this process can be costly, pupils would be asked to make a small contribution if they wish to try this.

Pistol and Rifle Air Gun Club runs during Terms 1 – 6

Pupils will be invited by the Headmaster to partake in this activity. Year 7 pupils who have expressed an interest in shooting are invited to two specified ‘slots’ in the Autumn Terms following the return of a reply slip. Pupils are introduced to pistols and rifles (.22 and .177) These sessions end at the end of Winter Term, when we then move to rifle shooting and clay pigeon trips

Radio Controlled 4×4 Club – runs Terms 1 – 6

Open to All Years. Meet with Ms Isaac in T2 on Wednesday after school (3.30pm to 4.30pm) 4X4 in schools is a national event we enter each year where we compete against other schools to design and build a Radio Controlled car to drive around an assault course. The team will find sponsors, create a brand, document progress, design using CAD, 3D print parts, write a portfolio, and a 10 min presentation to be judged by Jaguar Land Rover

Rocket Club – runs Terms 3 – 6

Pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9 are invited to join Mr Seal. On Tuesday evenings, 3.30 -5.00pm in S5. This club offers an opportunity for all pupils to study, design, build and launch model rockets. Some will also have the opportunity to represent Beechen Cliff in the National Rocketry Challenge

Spanish Club runs during Terms 1 – 6 inclusive

All interested Y8 and 9 are bienvenidos to join the Spanish Club to learn Spanish and cultural facts in an informal and fun way! We will play cards, watch films and have the opportunity to speak Spanish with other Spanish boys. Os esperamos! Speak with Mr Bonilla-Herrero for more details

Strength and Conditioning – runs Terms 1-6

Years 10 and 11 are invited by Mr Hawkins to come to the Fitness Suite. We will be using the treadmill, rowing machine and weights to help improve your fitness.

Warhammer Club – runs Terms 1-6

Runs all year from Term 1 – 6. All years are invited to join Mr Saunders on Tuesday afternoons 3.30pm to 5.00pm in Eaves – English Block. Inviting members new and old – we have plenty of miniatures and scenery, so do try and come along. Everyone welcome!

This is a fee paying activity for pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9. Please sign up for this activity via ParentPay.

For Sixth Form students. Takes place on the Astro, Thursday afternoons, 2.15pm – 3.30pm with Mrs de Glanville, Ms Milland and Mrs Merrett.
