Basketball
Under 16s v Bristol Metropolitan School
13th October 2008
Beechen 30 Bristol Met 78
Beechen Cliffs Under 16s played their first English schools game against Bristol Metropolitan on monday night and lost by 30 points to 78. This was the first time the reigning Bath Schools champions had played at this level and found the going very tough. The Bristol team started out much stronger and with a lot more energy and quickly built up a commanding lead. The home teams shooting was very poor and rather than driving to the basket continued to take the long shots. At the end of the first half Beechen were down 33 points to 8. The second half started off a lot more promising and saw the most productive time of the game for Beechen as they outscored the Bristol team by 16 points to 15 in the 3rd quarter. This improved performance could not be maintained and Bristol Met scored 30 points in the last quarter to take the game 78 - 30. This was a hard introduction to England Schools Basketball for the boys but will no doubt give them much needed experience of what basketball is all about at this level. Top scorers were Jo Frank with 12 points and Auguy Slowik with 6.

BaNES Boys Basketball Event – 30/04/08
Wednesday 30th April 2008 witnessed a new event for the very first time in the Bath and North East Somerset region. The BaNES Boys Basketball finals saw 75 children compete in some nail biting matches. Photographers from the Bath Chronicle were on hand to capture the best moments, including an inspirational opening address from the special guest - Basketball legend from the late 80's - Steve Nelson.
Old rivalries between Ralph Allen and Beechen Cliff in the Senior competition (Year 11 & 6 Form) were evident right from the tip off. Superiority kept swaying in this titanic battle with Beechen Cliff going into an early lead but over confidence perhaps got the better of them. Ralph Allen began to dominate the tie and eventually came out on top 50 points to 40.
In the junior Boys (Yr 7 & 8) match Wellsway School came into the finals full of confidence from cruising through the pool stages by winning all their matches. However, so did Beechen Cliff - on paper this could have been an epic. Unfortunately, right from the tip off there only looked like one team winning - Beechen Cliff. Baskets wooshed in from every angle as they cruised into a 21 - 0 lead. Wellsway never gave up and fought back to score some impressive baskets of their own. Yet, it was Beechen Cliff that prevailed 33 - 13.
In the Inter Boys (Yr 9 & 10) final Somervale School came screaming out of the blocks marking well in defence and looked sharp on the attack. But they could not convert the early pressure into points and it was again Beechen Cliff School that began to counter attack and pile on the points. Some fast, flowing moves excited the crowd with Beechen Cliff's attack scoring when ever they had a chance. However, Somervale kept clawing their way back into the match scoring some great baskets. Yet, Beechen Cliff won the game 31-19 making it two out of three for Beechen Cliff School.
The final game of the afternoon saw a friendly Girls match between Somervale and Wellsway Schools. The interest and support from all the boys was fantastic during this match with both teams displaying flair and style. Somervale just sneaked the win 16-14.
This event was a huge success. Quality was evident right the way through from the players to the officials. Many of the players on show could go on to collect representative honours for BaNES Schools when they take on North Somerset and Bristol later on in the year. Well done to everyone who supported this event!!
