Sport plays a very significant part in the life of the school. We have a wonderful tradition of participation and achievement in a wide range of sports. Rugby, Football, Cricket, Hockey, Tennis, Shooting, Table Tennis an Rowing are all sport in which the school regularly participates at a competitive level and more than twenty-five members of staff support the coaching of teams in a variety of pursuits.
As the school boasts ‘Old Boys’ in Jason Gardner and Sir Roger Bannister, it is unsurprising that achievement and determination, team spirit and ‘devotion to the cause’ are valued above all else. We are one of the very few state schools in the country to regularly play significant numbers of our rugby, cricket, football and hockey fixtures on a Saturday and we are proud of the significant participation levels in our sporting endeavours. Much of our competition is against independent schools and a brief scan of the individual pages for our sports will make you fully aware of the success which has been enjoyed over the years. We value achievement and the ‘man of the match’ tie is coveted by all who represent Beechen Cliff School – however, we value participation, determination and team spirit above all else. Our boys are always commended for their positive, disciplined approach and this is something of which the school is very proud. Our Sixth Form girls are developing sporting interests in Rugby and Football, supplied by the excellent support of a number of our staff.
We hope that the next few pages will give you a sense of the passion we have for sport and a recognition that we value this as strongly as any other academic and artistic pursuit.
British Champion – Gold Medallist
We are pleased to note that our very successful young judo expert, Harry Godwin, achieved a gold medal in the National Schools’ Championship in Cardiff at the weekend. Harry achieved his success in the Under 16 (81kg) class and this is the culmination of many successful appearances at local, regional and national level. Harry is ecstatic with his success. “I am really pleased to have achieved this success. My next encounter is at European level, where I will be competing in Bosnia. This is clearly a great honour for me and I know that everyone at Beechen Cliff School will be willing me on to greater success!”. Head of P.E., Simon Newbold, echoed the sentiments. “At Beechen Cliff we are renowned for sporting success with our teams. It is excellent to see a successful team player like Harry able to demonstrate his discipline and determination in this very exacting sport”.
Matthew Edwards, also in Year 10, participated in the Under 16 (55kg) class in the same event.
