Somerset Cup U13 -Semi Final
BCS v Clevedon
2nd March 2008
47-15
The Year 8 boys took on a strong Clevedon outfit at Shaft Road on Wednesday afternoon in the sem-final of the U13 Somerset Cup. Clevedon had a gigantic pack who outweighed our forwards and they had a back line with many threats. However our Year 8 team played to their strengths and ran the ball from all positions on the field and were 26 points up in the first 15 minutes.
Matt Macey was the hero of the day with 4 tries, however this would not have been possible withouth the excellent handling skills from his inside backs including Hugh Taylor, Joe Huntly and Patrick Curtis. The forwards took orders from the impressive Will Andrews all afternoon and they managed to front up to their larger opponents.
Other notable contributions came from Kirren Norris, who man-marked Clevedon's biggest threat in the backs, and from Tom Simpson, Alex Brewere and Bradley Lye who were relentless up front.
Thanks to all the parents for their continued support and we look forward to competing in the final next term.
Mr Sumison

CULVERHAY AND BEECHEN CLIFF SCHOOLS
COMBINED UNDER 13'S TOUR TO NEWPORT MARCH 2008
Culverhay School and Beecham Cliff School combined forces to tackle the extremely successful welsh rugby school Bassaleg in Newport last Saturday 15th March. The Welsh school is a feeder school for a lot of the Welsh National Developments sides and its most recent rugby celebrity is the present Welsh captain Ryan Jones along with names from the past linked to Bath such as Staurt Barnes and Jon Callard.
The driving force behind this initiative was Culverhay sports teacher Mr Gunning who linked up with his equal at Beechen Cliff Mr Wilmot. Mark said "this is the 1st time the 2 schools have put together a combined team and because of my long standing links to the Newport area from my university days the Bassaleg School was a natural link. I know most of the boys from our respective Bath schools play some extremely competitive rugby against each other and I felt along with Mr Wilmot this would be a great opportunity to bring together the best boys from the year 8's in the schools and give them a chance to play some representative rugby and venture across into Wales to experience some high quality opposition".
The two schools selected 12 players a piece and held one training session at Old Cilverhaysians Grounds at Odd Down to pull together the team.
The match was played at a feverish pace and despite the appalling weather conditions there was plenty of running rugby but our Welsh counter parts team-play proved to strong for the Bath outfit with Bassaleg running out worthy winners 42 to 17.
"All the Bath players in our squad got on the pitch had their moments in the game" said Mark Gunning " and the whole experience was fantastic for the boys and we were very fortunate to have some local sponsorship support from Brendan Noad of S.N Scaffold so all the players looked the part and this contributed to the whole event.
Brendan from S.N Scaffolded stated that "this is the sort of sporting event our company likes to be involved in with local youngsters from different schools pulling together and representing their schools & community in a really positive light - we had a fantastic day despite the weather and I'm sure the boys will take a lot away from the whole experience".
The schools are looking to combine again when there will be a return visit to Bath by the Bassaleg team late April with the match being played at the Old Culverhaysians ground - " I'm sure we will be bit more prepared when the Welsh team join us in the return match and I now the boys can't wait get together again they were good hosts and I'm sure we will match their hospitality".
Many Thanks

BCS 'A' v St. Gregory’s
31st October 2007
20-0
The game started off fast with Beechen Cliff on the attack. Matt Macey opened the scoring for Beechen following a cheeky chip from fly half Hugh Tayler over the St. Gregory’s winger. Lightening quick Macey chased and got a lucky bounce before diving over the line. Strong running from centres Jo Huntley and Kieran Norris along with scrum half William Andrews kept Beechen Cliff on the attack but due to good defence from St. Gregory’s Beechen couldn’t break the deadlock. They went into half time with a 5-0 lead.
In the second half, Beechen Cliff got a penalty and Andrews tapped and passed to Bradley Lye who smashed his way through about 5 defenders and plunged over the line for the second score to Beechen. St Gregory’s put up a good fight with some fast boys but brilliant defending by Patrick Curtis and Andrews stopped them scoring. In the last few minutes Beechen forwards picked and drove their way up the line then Matthew Withey peeled off the ruck and barged his way over. Three near misses from kicker Norris kept Beechen Cliff’s win to 15-0.

BCS ‘B’ v Bristol Grammar School ‘B’
10th November 2007
0-42
Beechen Cliff started the game slowly and carelessly but as the half went on we got better. Beechen Cliff started the kick off and were immediately under pressure from the powerful opposition pack. Beechen conceded an early try with no conversion made. Beechen kept their heads up for the rest of the game and were controlling the line outs. The forwards were offloading to the back line who made some ‘cheaky’ runs making good yardage but not BGS’ defence was solid. Too often BGS stole the ball in rucks and mauls and despite some spirited tackling, Beechen found themselves trailing 35-0 at half time.
Mr. Wilmot must’ve had had some encouraging words to the team because we picked ourselves up, made better tackles, made more yardage and won more scrums. We turned ball over in rucks and mauls. We defended our side of the pitch with courage and there was a big opportunity to for us to score and were yards from our destination – their try line but then BGS held us up. The resulting scrum turned for them and left Beechen devastated.
Beechen had given it their all but couldn’t force a deserved try. With the team tiring BGS ran in a late try. We all wanted the game to end by then but we kept going! There had been a great second half performance and the score was 42-0 in the end.
The players would like to thank Mr. Wilmot for managing and encouraging us the whole way!!

BCS ‘A’ v Bristol Grammar School ‘A’
10th November 2007
10-17
The first score of the match was rewarded to Beechen cliff after 5 minutes when captain Bradley Lye tore away from the scrum, then forced his way through the Bristol Grammar backline and outpaced their fullback to the right hand side touchline. A great effort, from a challenging kick out wide, saw centre Kieran Norris’s conversion attempt just drift wide. BGS regrouped and came back at us hard, but great defence from Pat Curtis held them back. Beechen were always conceding turnovers so BGS got quick ball away and spread it wide and dived in the corner. The conversion attempt failing. Those were the only scores of the half. BEECHEN 5 BRISTOL GRAMMAR 5
The second half went off with a fast start when we had quick ball from a ruck and used it well. Callum Lynch got the ball and surprisingly stepped the winger and put Bradley lye away with his 2nd of the match. The next try of the match came to BGS when their outside centre looped around our backs and dived just to the right of the sticks. The conversion missed. During the process of the try one of their players was taken off in a wheelchair because the ref tripped over him while he was on the ground.
With about 10 minutes left to play Beechen Cliff kept pushing for the try but strong defence and good counter rucking from Bristol Grammar held us back. The last try of the match was awarded to Bristol Grammar when they peeled of the back of a scrum and heaved under the posts. The kicker slotted it over. There was 2 minutes left on the clock and the ball stayed with BGS. Eventually
they hoofed it into touch.

BCS ‘B’ v Kingswood 'B’
17th November 2007
50-0
On the 17th of November, Beechen Cliff travelled to Kingswood Playing Fields hoping to put last year’s last minute loss behind us.
The first half started well with brilliant tackling and superb counter-rucking resulting with an early ‘chaos ball’ try by Callum Lewis. Joe Huntley, Alex Wych and Javan Catling also crossed to widen the gap. Our standards did not slip as we entered half time with the score at Kingswood 0 – Beechen Cliff 20.
In the second half, Kingswood’s discipline and concentration lapsed as we piled on the tries including one of the best tries of the game as Matt Davies sprinted from the Beechen Cliff 22 metre line to cross for a try. A comical moment followed as Matt Davies (second row) attempted a conversion, failed miserably and nearly hit a Kingswood player in the head! Callum Lewis and Ashley Robinson, again added to the score sheet as Beechen Cliff enjoyed their highest winning victory of the season.
Man of the match went to Joe Vyner for offering to play for Kingswood when one of their players was injured.

BCS v Court Fields
(Somerset Cup 2nd round)
27th November 2007
37-5
Beechen Cliff started strongly by getting the ball straight to Bradley Lye who gave Court Fields defence quite a shock and stormed through to give Beechen Cliff there first try. Beechen cliff kept the pressure on the Court Field defence breaking them down slowly, a ruck was formed on the line and hooker, Callum Lynch spotted the unprotected ball and dived on it to send Beechen Cliff 10-0 up. Court Fields strong defence held Beechen Cliff back and they started to kick for territory which put Beechen Cliff on the back foot. Beechen Cliff brought on some fresh legs amongst them was new comer Jack Langley who with his first touch of the ball showed his pace and out ran the Court Field defence to score an excellent try on his debut. At half time Beechen Cliff were 15-0 up.
In the second half Beechen Cliff really put the pressure on Court Field and started piling on the points tries were scored by; Joe Vyner when the ball was moved through the hands of the fly half and centres who gave it to Joe who used his acceleration and skill to blast through the defence to put the ball down under the post, the try was slotted over by Patrick Curtis. Callum Lynch scored his second try by picking up from the back of the ruck and using his skill and strength to drive his way through. Eventually Court Fields strong rucking and good attacking broke the Beechen Cliff line and they were in for their first try. John Grier used his size and strength to score two tries, his first try he peeled from the back of the maul and battered his way through the defence, and his second try Bradley Lye offloaded to him and he powered through the defence and Kieran Norris converted the try. The final whistle blew and Beechen Cliff won 37-5.
We now look forward to the next round.

BCS v Kingswood
17th November 2007
26-7
Straight from kick off Beechen Cliff were on the attack, the forwards picking and going shortly after Matt Macey got the ball from centre Jo Huntley and ran down the side of the pitch and scoring his 6th try of the season. Hugh Taylor followed with the conversion. Kingswood looked worried. Beechen Cliff were playing some quality rugby from the forwards and backs. After that Bradley Lye got the ball from Callum Lynch and smashed through their strong defence, running half the pitch to be in for the 2nd try of the match. Unfortunately Hugh was inches wide with the conversion.
Beechen Cliff were 12.0 up. Kingswood came back very hard at us, but Beechen, with some top class defending didn’t let them pass. The game was a midfield battle for a while but suddenly Will Andrews spun the ball to Bradley and he powered through again for his 2nd try. It was converted by Kieran Norris.
Half Time Beechen 19: Kingswood 0.
Mr Sumsion gave some encouraging words at Half Time.
The second half began with Beechen on the attack some great passing by Hugh and Patrick Curtis led to Kieran Norris having a great run along the touch line. Unfortunately he got tackled but then Paddy was there supporting him, he picked the ball up and jumped for the touch down. Beechen cliff extended their lead with a fantastic kick from Kieran. Kingswood still had their heads up and were pushing us back eventually they powered through under the posts to score a consolation try.
Beechen Cliff 26: Kingswood 7
The game ended shortly after that try. Kingswood put up a good fight but Beechen were just too strong.
Thanksto Mr Sumsion for managing us and supporting us
